New Brighton CC
New Brighton Cycling is a long established part of the Merseyside network of clubs stretching back to the 1930s and our current and previous members have played a significant role in the administration of the sport, locally and nationally. At this time (Feb 25) NBCC offers a range of activities for young and old cycle enthusiasts.
Like every other kind of sports club, NBCC is responsible for the activities it organises and is subject to various rules and regulations. We are bound to the regulations of two bodies, the British Cycling Federation (BCF), which is the national governing body for the sport of cycling in Britain, and also Cycling UK (CUK), which oversees the proper management of social or leisure cycling. Membership of the BCF also enables us to organise, for example, local road races, and very importantly provides insurance cover for the club. Similarly, membership of CUK covers the club for social rides. The club handbook contains more information on insurance but it is generally recommended that you seek your own insurance. For example, BCF and CUK offer individual membership which also comes with insurance.
In addition to the BCF, there are other cycling bodies such as Cycling Time Trials, the UK governing body for, you guessed it, Time Trialling (individual racing against the clock), to which the club has belonged in the past.
The club has a formal constitution, which provides a management and decision making framework. It is managed by a committee defined by the constitution. Members of the committee are proposed and votes taken each year at the Annual General Meeting, usually taking place in November/December.
The committee is accountable for two main tasks. The first is Club Administration (or management), making sure the club operates within the laws and regulations that apply to it, especially the rules of the governing bodies to which the club belongs. The second task is to further the development of the club, both in the growth of members and variety and quality of activities.
The World of Cycling
The individual sports a cyclist might enjoy have grown hugely, even in the past 20 years or so. Traditionally, NBCC has been a Road Racing and Time Trialling club, although most members at the moment, with a few exceptions, are leisure riders. The club is involved in an established Youth Coaching scheme operated with several other Wirral and Cheshire based cycling clubs. Members have also dabbled in Track events, at Manchester Velodrome.
At the time of writing NBCC only offers to members leisure or social rides. Individual members, however, are free to participate in events organised by other cycling clubs. Types of cycling events that can be enjoyed are listed below. Once a member you will learn a lot more about each. Meanwhile, British Cycling website has tons more information on track, BMX and on and off-road road racing,
- Social Rides and group training, including Sportives, which are long distance organised rides. More here
- Cycle Racing. Road and Off-road (see British Cycling web pages )
- Track Events (training and/or racing). More here.
- Time trialling (riding against the clock, usually as individuals)
Social rides
The idea of the ‘social ride’ maybe suggests something very informal. However, there are many rules to follow that anyone new to cycling may not be aware of. These comprise the etiquette of group riding, whether purely social, or for more serious training rides. There are a few videos on YouTube if you need to know more. You also need to be familiar with the UK’s Highway Code as it applies to cyclists (and motorists, which most cyclists are also).
Most cycling clubs organise rides under different categories which indicate level of overall difficulty. Currently, NBCC offers a club ride on Sundays throughout the year, weather permitting. Our rides are listed by average speed. The average speed ranges overlap as rides cover both hilly and flat. A social ride is run at around 20-23kph (12-15 mph) but there are some rules to follow which are explained in our Club Handbook.
Distances might vary but 30 miles is a standard social ride. Meeting places and times will vary and will be posted on the WhatsApp group. Cancellations and delayed starting times will be communicated through our WhatsApp group (members only). Individual members will not be contacted. A limit as to the size of the group might be imposed on certain rides. In such instances, places will be available on a first come first served basis.
All rides include a ‘coffee and cake’ stop. We recommend that newcomers/ new members join a Sunday social for their first ride, which can be arranged on a club meeting night.
Becoming a member
NBCC’s welcomes new members. The best way to get to know us is to come along to our monthly social gathering. We meet on the first Tuesday of every month, at 8pm at the Wallasey Yacht Club, 10 Hope St, New Brighton, Wallasey CH45 2LN. The best way to get a taste for group riding is by joining a Sunday ride.
Membership fees .
NBCC’s membership year runs from November 1st to October 31st. Subscriptions should be fully paid by the club’s Annual General Meeting, usually held in November/December.
At this time NBCC extends a particular welcome to adult female and males who are keen to ride and who might be willing to contribute to the management and development of the club. As a member of the club (with or without a formal role) you will be encouraged to put forward ideas to develop the club in new directions, and will be supported doing so, once approval has been granted by the Club Committee. So if you think the club would gain members by offering BMX racing, you can put the idea forward formally. If the Club Committee approves your suggestion then you would be invited to work with designated committee members to bring it to fruition.
